Papeete, Tahiti and Las Vegas, NV (PRWeb) December 21, 2006 -- More than 16,047 runners braved cold weather to hit the pavement Sunday morning for the New Las Vegas Marathon 2006. Of course, OnlyTahiti.com was present shining among other sponsors such as Sprint, CBS Channel 8 and the City of Las Vegas. The New Las Vegas Marathon, in just its second year, attracted an event record 16,047 participants - up from 10,773 when the race debuted in 2005. By popular demand, race organizers added a half-marathon to this year's race that contributed to the explosive 50% growth of the event. If the event grows an additional 50% for the 3rd annual New Las Vegas Marathon on Sunday, December 9, 2007, it will reach the 25,000 participant cap set by Clark County Nevada and the City of Las Vegas.



Both races began with a spectacular display of pre-dawn fireworks and an energetic live performance by Blue Man Group on the start line. The race further succeeded in its mission to offer more entertainment per mile than any marathon in the world with a 400% increase in entertainment centers over last year. In the last four miles alone, there were ten "Home-Stretch Entertainment Stations" to inspire participants to the finish line, where performers from Mystere by Cirque du Soleil welcomed the finishers.

Among the race's many "Only in Vegas" experiences - 75 Elvis runners, nine showgirls and 24 couples who got married or renewed their vows at the mile 5 Run Thru Wedding Chapel. Host Hotel Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino produced blackjack felts customized with New Las Vegas Marathon artwork and a limited edition $5 gaming chip commemorating this year's race.

This prestigious event also demonstrated participation of several competitors in wheelchair and blind persons. Pierre de Coubertin responsible for the revival of the Olympic Games in 1894 once said, "Sport is part of every man and woman's heritage and its absence can never be compensated for."

Coubertin designed the Olympic five-ring logo to symbolize the five original continents: Africa, America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. "They represent the five parts of the world now won over to the Olympism and ready to accept its fertile rivalries," he explained. "The six colors thus combined represent those of all nations, with no exceptions. This is a real international emblem."

Dr. Burke, President of the Las Vegas Marathon said he expects to succeed, notably because of the host city."You sense in this town a shift in attitude," he said. "There's a whole new level of excitement that wasn't here last year. That's from the runners traveling here and from the locals, saying they enjoy this event and are excited about it. And I just love that. The electricity around this event didn't have this level of intensity last year."

7500 volunteers were on hand at each mile marker to make sure the runners had enough water and bananas to keep them going .There was also entertainment along the way, including choirs and live bands.Rendez-vous Dec 9 2007 for the next Las Vegas Marathon and let's aim for the Olympic motto, "Fortius, Altius, Faster, Strongest, Highest."
